Student Testimonies
Reflections from students after returning from a summer with Camp Adventure:
Throughout training Dr. Edginton continually told us that this summer we would create magic moments that would last a lifetime. He was 110% right.
This summer has been one filled with many new experiences that I will remember forever.
I had the chance to interact with Japanese citizens on a day to day basis, impact a child’s life, and climb Mt. Fuji. I don’t know how many other 20 year olds could say the same.
As I have learned from being a part of Camp Adventure, training can only get you so far, and it’s what you do with that training that makes you who you are.
I was able to fulfill my director duties while interacting with the kids and center staff.
I felt more independent this summer than I ever have before.
I realized that I do not need anyone to help me succeed.
I am no longer a teenager, now everything is my responsibility.
I know some college students have everything handed to them on a silver platter but I have worked my way through college for the past four years and will continue to do so.
It is surprising to me how rewarding it is to know that I am not dependent on anyone and I can live my life how I want it.
Over the course of this summer I learned more about myself that I had ever expected.
I always pictured myself staying in Iowa and teaching in a classroom after I graduated, but after my experience this summer I know that this will not be the case.
I look forward to traveling around the world before I settle down in a career and I have realized that I will not confine myself to the classroom setting.
While I love the idea of teaching in a classroom, I can also see myself doing something like a camp director or non profit work and will explore these options before making my career decision.
I also know that I will not be living in Iowa for much longer as having a taste of traveling to Hawaii has made me crave a life by the ocean.
I appreciate my Camp Adventure experience as I know it has changed the path that I will choose for the rest of my life.
Perhaps the biggest lesson I have learned is that the rules that are implemented are there to protect us counselors at camp and it is best that I follow them.
It is my whole hearted opinion that this summer with Camp A has changed me for the better.
One of the main deciding factors for me when I chose to go to UNI was that I would be able to be part of the Camp Adventure Program.
My mother says I’ve changed. She says I seem older now than I did when I left.
Camp Adventure changes people in so many ways, and I know that everyone changed a bit from it.
I can’t wait to continue recruiting people to have an amazing experience like I did.
I can’t thank camp A enough for the opportunity to travel and grow. Camp A has allowed me to grow professionally and personally.
For those considering the Camp Adventure program, take the opportunity.
The children will change you for the good and help you appreciate the process of
development or growing up.
They made me want to go back in time and be a kid again.
The opportunities are at your fingertips and the things that you can learn are endless.
I have nothing but positive things to say about the Camp Adventure program and I cannot wait to start recruiting new counselors for the next summer.
This program is the most unique and amazing thing that I know I will ever do and I am so thankful that I did not turn around and go home after being freaked out during the first twenty minutes of the LAC!"
