What is Camp Adventure?
Camp Adventure™ Youth Services is a non-profit, student run organization that trains college students to provide services for children and youth around the world. Camp Adventure™ Youth Services currently serves more than 8,000 children daily. One of the distinct features of Camp Adventure™ Youth Services is our flexibility. We design the services to meet the unique needs of each community. Camp Adventure™ Youth Services trademark programs include day camps, resident camps, aquatic programs, and child development center internships.
What is the Leadership Assessment Conference (LAC)?
The Leadership Assessment Conference is a group interview process that will allow you to gain additional information about the Camp Adventure program and also give the Camp Adventure leaders the opportunity to assess your leadership abilities and ability to be a positive role model. In order to participate, you must attend ONE LAC at the University of Oregon or Oregon State University.
Do I get to choose where I will be going?
Participants will choose the specific destinations to which they would like to travel. Usually, students are placed within their top five choices.
Do I need to be able to speak another language?
There are no language requirements. We work mostly on U.S. military bases so all the children speak English. We also work in U.S. Embassies running camps that focus on English as a second language.
Do you have to be an Education major to participant?
Students from all areas of study are welcome in the Camp Adventure program.
Do you have to be a student at the University of Oregon, Oregon State, or Western Oregon?
Participation is not limited to UO, OSU, or WOU students. Students from other colleges are welcome! The only requirement is that students must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at the end of spring semester and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher before training begins in January.
Do I get paid?
Participants will receive a living stipend of $25 a day, which will amount to between $1,500-$1,700 depending on the length of the camp. Your housing and plane ticket will be paid for. You will receive your total stipend at the end of training.
If accepted, when would l leave and return from camp?
Most students depart right after classes end and return about a month before school starts.
Can I take part in this program if I do not have experience with children?
Yes, you can participate in the program if you do not have experience working with children; however, you will need to obtain 40 hours working with children before going out in the field. Camp Adventure will assist you in obtaining the experience you need, but we do advise that you begin your hours before the interview if you are truly interested in the program. Strong applicants have between 100-200 hours working with children in a group setting.
When does training start?
After you have been accepted to the Camp Adventure program, training will begin in the winter term. Trainings will typically be a couple Saturdays a month, at University of Oregon, primarily. Attendance to all trainings is mandatory.
What if I am not a U.S. citizen? Can I still participate?
Unfortunately, we are unable to accept students who are not US citizens.
What programs do you have available during the Fall or Spring?
We have a Fall/Spring Internship Program that may fit your time line. This program is run on military bases around the world, primarily serving in Child Development Centers as support staff for military bases highly impacted by deployments. You can do both the summer and the semester internship or just one. We even have students in the field who choose to study abroad with our program for up to a year at a time! We do like to bring students home for at least a week or two between programs if possible.
How much does it cost to participate in Camp Adventure?
While much of the Camp Adventure program is covered by us, including round-trip international airfare, housing expenses overseas, and a living stipend of around $1,700 per summer depending on the length of the program, we do require a few fees from you as well. Most students learn how to budget their stipend quickly and end up breaking even over the summer.
As a Camp Adventure participant you will only be paying for things that you personally need; you are not paying to take part in the program. The total cost will be around $1,500. The price for each student will vary based upon the requirements that have already been fulfilled. For example, if you already have a passport you will not have to pay that fee, or if you have health insurance, you will not have to pay that fee. The payments will be spread out over the entire training period. A detailed cost sheet will be available at a later date.
